Kellen was a standout player at Dunbar High School in Baltimore, Maryland. He led the state in hitting in 1998 as a senior (.698). Kellen received all city and all metro honors for his play as an outfielder and pitcher. After high school he earned an athletic scholarship to Alabama A&M University. Kellen returned home to play at Baltimore City CC after a season down south. Kellen signed as a free agent with the Anaheim Angels organization in 1999. During his time with the Angels he played in the Pioneer League, Fall Arizona Instructional League and the Arizona League.

Kellen is currently the head varsity baseball coach at Reginald F. Lewis High School in Baltimore and the assistant coach for the TBW Badgers 13 U team. He will move in to a head coaching role in the Fall of 2017.
